
While researching ways to improve performance on a file server, I came across some interesting information. There are a few registry values that can be modified to reduce some of the overhead inherent in NTFS. If you are an old school IT guy like me, you may remember back in the DOS days of seeing file and folder names such as Progra~1, Filena~1.txt, etc… Well NTFS still keeps an eight character version of all filenames for DOS and Windows 3.1 compatibility. Why it does this, I have no idea. This can be disabled by navigating to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem and changing the value of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation to 1.
